OCAA Badminton

Margaret Myjak with Gold Medal Margaret Myjak of Mohawk College has won the Gold Medal in women’s singles at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Badminton Championships at Seneca College in North York February 17-18. The performance by the Mountaineer star also earned her OCAA Female Athlete of the week honours.
Myjak went through the competition without losing a single set, and finished 7-0 overall.

She defeated  Ivy Yasay of George Brown 11-0, 11-4 in the gold medal match.

“Margaret was so strong during the round robin portion of the tournament that she was never really challenged, said her coach Bill Carmichael. “The most anybody got off of her was 4 points.”

With her victory, Myjak moves on to the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Championships March 2-4 at Mount Royal College in Calgary.

Last year, Myjak won a silver medal in Ontario and finished fifth in Canada.

Women’s Volleyball

The Mohawk women’s volleyball team will join their male counterparts at the OCAA Volleyball Championships.
The Mountaineers downed Trent University in three straight games in their quarter final crossover match in Peterborough February 18. The scores were 25-17, 25-16, 25-22.

Mountaineers’ coach Brian McEnhill said, “We served well and hit the right spots. We made a number of errors, but at the end of the day it didn’t hinder us. Trent couldn’t do much with the digging and blocking of the Mohawk ladies.” McEnhill called it a great win and said the team is looking forward to the OCAA’s, which will be played February 23-25 at Humber College in Toronto.

Basketball

The Mohawk women’s basketball team tuned up for the OCAA cross over quarter final game with a 90-34 romp over Redeemer in the Mountaineers’ final regular season game. Susan Shaw-Davis scored 31 points while Rachelle Moore and Alexis Rakovac added 16 apiece for Mohawk, which finished with a 7-5 record and will have it’s quarter final game this weekend. Details on opponent and location were still to be determined.

The women also played on February 14, losing 50-46 to Sheridan at the Bruins Brampton Campus. Shaw-Davis had 12 points.

Meanwhile, the Mohawk men’s team outgunned Redeemer 108-98. Panyin Kyei had 30 points and 14 rebounds for the Mountaineers, while Nick Gaspic scored 22.
The men failed to make the playoffs despite a 9-5 record, after winning seven of their last eight games.

One of the victories was February 14, when Mohawk went to Sarnia and downed Lambton Lions 95-87. Kyei had 34 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists. Igor Trbojevic hooped 20 points for the Mountaineers.

Indoor Soccer

Mohawk’s indoor soccer teams competed in the Sheridan Invitational Tournament February 18. Even though the Oakville college was hosting the event, it was played at Soccer World in Hamilton.

The Mohawk women finished second in their pool to Durham, posting a 2-1 record. They went on to defeat Sheridan 3-1 in the semi finals, before bowing to Durham 4-2 in the final.

The men’s team won their pool with a 2-0-1 mark before losing in the semi finals to Sheridan, 3-2 on penalty kicks and then were defeated 2-1 by George Brown in the consolation final.

Humber took the title, 2-1 over Sheridan.
